René Daniëls, born in the Netherlands in 1950, completed a large amount of paintings, watercolors and drawings before his untimely stroke. He developed a very fast technique from the early days of his career – a painting could be done as a short note of an idea. He mainly combined a literal image (guitars. bow ties and the like) with purely visual material (squares, abstracted backgrounds, et cetera). The resulting surrealist imagery could be seen as a progression of the work of Picabia or Polke, or dadaism more generally, but it also had its generation with the postmodern era in the 1980s. A brief but prolific, and highly influential, body of work.
